Infection Prevention and Control

Training on the prevention and control of infection should form part of the induction programme for all new staff and be included in on-going training programmes.

Induction training

All healthcare support workers new in post are expected to undertake the Care Certificate as part of their induction.

The Skills for Care – Care Certificate(link is external) sets out the learning outcomes, competencies and standards of care that will be expected to ensure that the healthcare support worker is caring, compassionate and provides quality care. There are 15 standards in the care certificate and Standard 15 relates specifically to infection prevention and control.

Training resources for care homes

React To

React To(link is external) is a series of training resources specifically designed for care home staff and cover several topics including infection prevention. The React To Infection resources enable care home staff to understand their role in the prevention of influenza and norovirus, through a variety of downloadable resources.

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust’s Community Infection Prevention and Control team have produced a range of educational infection prevention and control resources. This includes, the Preventing infection workbook: guidance for care homes(link is external) which is designed for all levels of staff and is evidence based.

Leicestershire Social Care Development Group

Leicestershire Social Care Development Group(link is external) offers support and development opportunities for the social care workforce within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. They provide this training to over 400 care provider services, including care homes, nursing homes, domiciliary care, and supported living. All of the courses provided are delivered in short 30 minute to 1 hour sessions. These courses are delivered by experienced experts, who cover topics ranging from infection prevention and control, moving and handling, safeguarding, mental capacity act, and others.
